Kepler Proposed Re-Design and Additional Screen Designs

Overall Design Rationale:
  • Improve readability.
  • Develop cohesive visual language.
  • Follow standard HF principles.
  • Improve organization.
  • Incorporate consistent interaction design.
  • Simplify where able to reduce confusion.
  • Speak the user's language, not developer's.
  • Communicate effectively.

Designs:

  • Visual Re-Design - Downey recommended for 1.0 release.
    • Status, 12/5/2006, basically complete for colors and symbols but for a few minor changes. See visual re-design page.
    • Need to re-vamp all dialog boxes for consistency in language and layout of buttons and standard use and layout of common UI widgets.
    • Priority - high

  • Menu and Tool Bar Re-Design - Downey recommended for 1.0 release.
    • Status, 12/5/2006, tool bar re-design complete. Menu re-design not complete. See menu re-design page.
    • Priority - high

  • Actor and Data Tabs - Downey recommended first revision for 1.0 release, 2nd revision design is recommended for a future release (includes the "saved" tab).
    • Status, 12/5/2006, not fully complete. See actor and data tabs page.
    • Priority - medium

  • Workflow, Director and Actor Dialogs - Downey recommended for 1.0 release (due to time contraints these will not go in release 1.0)
    • Status, 12/6/2006, not implemented.
    • Priority - high

  • Search Dialogs - Downey recommended for post-1.0 release
    • Status, 12/6/2006, not implemented.
    • Priority - medium

  • Authentication Dialogs - Downey recommended for 1.0 release (these dialogs of course could be left out if we don't put authentication into this next release)
    • Status, 12/6/2006, unsure and depends on if/when and how authentication is added to Kepler

  • Semantic Annotation Dialogs
    • Status, 12/6/2006, current dialogs do not reflect results of formative design exercise with users and no usability review has been conducted. This is an area for discussion.
    • Priority - high

  • Splash and Welcome Screens - Downey recommends for 1.0 release
    • Status, 12/6/2006 - splash screen complete. Welcome screen mostly complete, few minor adjustments to be made.
    • Priority - medium

  • Query Builder Dialog - Downey recommended minimal changes for release 1.0
    • Status, 12/6/2006, incomplete. Some changes were made, others were not. See query builder dialog page.
    • Priority - high
